SUMMARY:A Matter of Life and Death: The Battle for a True Education with Joseph Pearce
DESCRIPTION:In an age of radical relativism and secular fundamentalism\, the very future of education is threatened. Joseph Pearce unmasks the poison of modern education and its anti-Christian agenda. He reveals the marks of a true education\, one which counters the culture of death with eternal life-giving verities.

SUMMARY:Why the World Needs More Ghost Stories: The Dialogues of Gregory the Great
DESCRIPTION:The influence of Pope Saint Gregory the Great on the liturgy\, organization\, and dogma of the Church cannot be overstated. His Dialogues\, however\, are a stumbling block for his present-day admirers. A man of such profound intellect and extraordinary talents could not possibly have written\, in the words of one skeptic\, “a bizarre and astonishing grab bag of stories about the next world in which ghosts abound.” Even Butler’s Lives of Saints wonders how “the Dialogues could have been written by anyone so well balanced as Saint Gregory.” \nThis lecture argues that the Dialogues—Gregory’s deliberate and highly popular effort to create a new martyrology for a Christian Italy in which there were few martyrs\, strictly speaking—are altogether worthy of their author. Further\, Christians today would derive much benefit from meditating on them. As narrative alone\, they are a wonderful work. As spiritual direction\, they are a masterful work\, stressing humility as central to holiness\, and exposing the consequences of seeking human respect. \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nChristopher Check is president of Catholic Answers. A graduate of Rice University\, for nearly two decades he served as vice president of The Rockford Institute. Before that he served for seven years as a field artillery officer in the Marine Corps\, attaining the grade of captain. He lectures on Church and military history. He and his wife\, Jacqueline\, have four sons. The Checks show and breed Cavalier King Charles Spaniels\, famed companions of the Stuart kings\, under the kennel name Top Meadow Cavaliers\, named for G.K. Chesterton’s Beaconsfield estate.

SUMMARY:Theologies of Despair and Indifference: Theological Themes in the Paintings of Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel the Elder
DESCRIPTION:Watch the Lecture Here\n  \nThe paintings of the Flemish masters Hieronymus Bosch (c.1450-1516) and Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c.1526-1569) bridge both the Late Middle Ages and the Northern Renaissance and the confessional fault lines of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation. If Bosch can be seen as the last great painter of the Middle Ages\, then Bruegel is the first truly modern and secular artist. None of his works were painted for the Church. While Bruegel was clearly influenced by Bosch\, his art is informed by the ideals of humanism and the Renaissance. Both are incomparable artists of mimetic contagion and desire\, of showing what happens when human desire is not focused on God. In what can be termed their “theologies of despair\,” both artists’ pessimistic view of humankind reveals the seismic cultural and theological rifts of their time. There is little that is redemptive about the work of both artists. Bosch is essentially an infernal artist\, while Brueghel is the artist of indifference. Both were artist moralists. While Bosch’s religious art is explicit\, Bruegel’s is subtler: his is a hidden theology. Both share common themes. In this paper\, Dr. O’Hara will focus on select works of both artists to illustrate and further explore their theological themes using the mimetic theory of René Girard. \nDr. Alexander O’Hara\, Harvard University\nDr. Alexander O’Hara is a Fulbright Fellow in the Department of Celtic Languages and Literatures at Harvard University and Honorary Fellow in the Faculty of Theology at St Patrick’s Pontifical University\, Maynooth. A graduate in Medieval History of the University of St Andrews and Oxford University\, he has held Research Fellowships at Trinity College Dublin\, the Institute of Medieval Research at the Austrian Academy of Sciences\, and the Institute for Advanced Study\, Princeton. He is the author of Jonas of Bobbio and the Legacy of Columbanus (Oxford University Press\, 2018)\, editor of Columbanus and the Peoples of Post-Roman Europe (Oxford University Press\, 2018)\, and translator of Jonas of Bobbio: Life of Columbanus\, Life of John\, and Life of Vedast (Liverpool University Press\, 2017). He is co-editor of St Sunniva: Irish Queen\, Norwegian Patron Saint (Bergen\, 2021)\, and his current book project concerns the cultural perception of Ireland and the Irish from Antiquity to the Anglo-Norman Conquest of Ireland. \n

SUMMARY:The Teaching Power of the Parable: Understanding the Enigmatic
DESCRIPTION:In John 18:37\, Christ tells us that He came into the world to reveal the Truth. If this is so\, why does scripture so often use confusing and difficult language? Was this a way of keeping some people out? Or\, is enigma actually an important pedagogical tool? In this presentation\, we will take steps to understand exactly why it is that Scripture uses parables and even seems to “hide” certain truths from the unready. \n\n

SUMMARY:Can Democratic Ideals Survive in the Administrative State?
DESCRIPTION:During the Covid crisis\, the assertion of sweeping new government powers should force Americans to confront a disturbing trend: With increasing frequency\, the political decisions that affect our lives most dramatically are made not by the people\, nor by their elected representatives\, but by unelected bureaucrats. How can the rise of the administrative state be reconciled with the Founders’ vision of a government of the people? How can sweeping executive orders be justified in “a government of laws\, not of men?” And if the trend toward bureaucratic control undermines our form of government\, how can it be reversed?

SUMMARY:Rediscovering the Gift of Creation: the Truth about Environmentalism
DESCRIPTION:What is Creation and how is it different from “the environment”? What does this difference say about the environmentalism and climate alarmism of our time? Renewing our contemplation and comprehension of Creation is of the utmost importance\, “for from the greatness and beauty of created things comes a corresponding perception of their Creator” (Ws 13:5). In the end\, environmentalism founded on a faulty understanding of creation will always fall short\, for only Love can sustain sustainability.

SUMMARY:Rediscovering Columbus
DESCRIPTION:Across the nation\, schoolchildren are being taught that Christopher Columbus was a genocidal maniac. Monuments to the explorer are being quietly removed from the public square—if they haven’t already been destroyed by radical activists. But as Robert Royal\, author of Columbus and the Crisis of the West\, pointedly asks\, “If the arrival of our civilization and religion on these shores\, whatever later evils ensued\, cannot be calmly discussed\, let alone defended\, what are we now as a people?” \nJoin us for just such a civil forum\, as we assemble renowned public intellectuals to give us the true and complex story of “a daring explorer\, consummate navigator\, and a man on a mission not only of discovery but of evangelization.” \n\nMeet the Speakers\nRegister Now!

Through our online summit series\,  we aim to create an authentic Catholic experience where the Good\, the True and the Beautiful are glimpsed through lively discourse punctuated by earnest prayer\, strong drink\, and the real mirth found in friendship. \nCatholicism needn’t be stodgy and narrow.  Quite the contrary! As G.K. Chesterton reminds us\, the walls built by the Church through doctrine and discipline are not the walls of a prison\, but the “walls of a playground.” \nAnd as Belloc wrote\, “Wherever the Catholic Sun doth shine\, there’s always laughter and good red wine.  At least I’ve always found it so. Benedicamus Domino.” \nIndeed it is so.  Let us bless the Lord! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFAQs\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I participate?\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe meeting will take place on Zoom conference. SUMMARY:The Book of Revelation and Global Crisis: Learning to Hope During a Pandemic Apocalypse
DESCRIPTION:A Lecture by J. David Franks\, Ph.D.\nThe world is gripped by tribulation now. Apocalyptic prophecy provides guidance on how to live well despite death’s dominion. How might Christian disciples cultivate hope in the world and in our children? The culminating vision of Scripture reveals how the ever-greater Trinitarian love is mediated into the battleground world with our battleground hearts. \nJ. David Franks is chairman of the board of Massachusetts Citizens for Life\, the Commonwealth’s pro-life authority\, directing its Lincoln Forum for Human Dignity\, an attempt to renew civic conversation through liberal arts and high culture. He is also a research fellow at the Abigail Adams Institute in Cambridge\, conducting its flagship program\, The Great Conversation. David received his Ph.D. in systematic theology from Boston College\, and was professor of sacred theology for almost a decade at St. John’s Seminary\, where he co-founded the Theological Institute for the New Evangelization. \nThe Book of Revelation and Global Crisis: Learning to Hope During a Pandemic Apocalypse

SUMMARY:What's Still Wrong with the World
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with G.K. Chesterton (performed by Dr. John “Chuck” Chalberg). The night will discuss What’s Still Wrong with the World\, based of his book What’s Wrong with the World which is still very relevant to our modern times. \nDr. Chalberg delights many audiences throughout the United States with his historical impersonations of American and British characters\, such as President Theodore Roosevelt and G.K. Chesterton. \nHis characterizations of Theodore Roosevelt and H.L. Mencken began as an extension of his teaching of American History at Normandale Community College in Bloomington\, MN. In recent years he has added G.K. Chesterton\, George Orwell\, Branch Rickey\, and most recently Bobby Jones\, while reviving a past character\, Huey Long. Last summer\, he also revived his characterization of Patrick Henry for a chautauqua in AK. \nChuck is attempting to bring to life several significant figures of the past. He has performed for state chautauquas all over the country\, as well as for many colleges and business groups. \n
